Over the past year, a debate has been sparked in Duluth about whether the city should require employers to offer paid sick leave as a benefit. Earned Sick and Safe Leave (ESST) has the potential to affect all employers and employees within city limits and possibly the surrounding communities.

On February 7th, join the Northland Human Resource Association for a special event to learn about ESST, the taskforce appointed by the City Council to study this issue, and how it may impact your organization. We have invited representatives from the Duluth City Council, Area Partnership for Economic Expansion (APEX), ESST Taskforce, and supporters of the campaign for a panel discussion open to members and non-members. Sign-up today to guarantee your spot. Bring your questions for the panelists.

ESST Panel

Moderator - Rob Karwath, Northcoast Communications

Duluth City Council  - Zack Filipovich

APEX - Brian Hanson

ESST Taskforce -  Arik Forsman & Chad Ronchetti

Take Action Minnesota – Shawnu Ksicinski

Both Minneapolis, MN and St. Paul, MN have recently passed ordinances for ESST.  Those ESST ordinances require employers to provide paid sick and safe time for employees. ESST can be used for an employee's absence from work due to illness, medical appointments, or critical safety issues, including domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking. These ordinances apply to most employers in those cities.

This panel discussion will focus on the potential ordinance recommendations for the City of Duluth and provide a forum for businesses and human resource professionals to ask questions and express support and/or concern.
